Owen Wins Carling Player of the Month Award

Newcastle United Captain and leading goal scorer Michael Owen has been awarded the Carling Newcastle United Player of the Month award for April 2008. It is Owen's second award in consecutive months as his goals and performance on the pitch has secured Kevin Keegan's side a 7 game unbeaten run.

He has scored 12 goals so far this season and the fans handed him the award with 67% of the votes, his competition came in the form of Habib Beye who received 25%.

When Owen won the March award the gap between him and Beye was much closer, Owen scored 41% whilst Beye received 37%. At the time he said:

"It was from the middle of March that we started to turn things around results wise and climb up the table. On a personal note, it was nice to get a little scoring run going, but there were some good performances across the team from all of the lads."

Bob Moncur and Lee Ryder from the Chronicle construct the list of candidates whilst fans vote for who they believe should win at http://www.carling.com/. Owen will be presented with his latest award ahead of Newcastle's Bank Holiday match against Chelsea.

Moncur said or Owen's triumph:

"I think Owen has led by example in the last month or so and just simply got on with the job like a man.

His goals have been crucial but as captain you need more than that, you need leadership and the understanding of everybody around you.

You can see he has instilled that by the huddle before the games.

Maybe in a few years people can look at that and say it was the start of something quite special under Kevin Keegan."

I would have gone with Beye, but either are deserving. Harps might have gotten the nod as well. Good job by all.

I think Keegan deserves the Manager of the month accolade in my opinion.
