Harper & Keegan Reflect On "Brilliant" Performance
By Tyne-Talk April 1 2008
Newcastle United FC's keeper Steve Harper has praised his fellow team-mates after a performance which saw Nicky Butt, Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen and Geremi all score against Spurs at White Hart Lane & Newcastle concede just 1 goal. The stopper, who is the club's longest serving player and the only one remaining from Keegan's first stint at the club believes this could mark Keegan's arrival.

Harper said:

"When we look back we might look at that game and say that was the spark that ignited everything.

That was the moment the new Kevin Keegan era really began in earnest. I certainly hope so.

It was absolutely brilliant, fantastic. It was as good a team display as I've ever been involved in.

It's been a long time coming, but I can't remember a team during my time here playing as well as that away from home.

It was different class. I think we got a big boost when we arrived at the ground and saw Tottenham had changed their shape to try and match us.

It meant they were worrying about us and what we can do. It's all credit to the manager for changing the formation a few weeks ago because it has worked."

Harper isnt the only one. It would have been hard to miss the excitement and relief that washed over manager Kevin Keegan's face as the ball hit the back of the net, with his two top strikers both scoring.

Obafemi Martins had a great day and topped it off with the goal he craved. He had previously announced it was his turn to score, after recent goals by Owen and Viduka, Keegan told The Chronicle:

"I just said to Oba at half-time: ‘With your ability, when you get the ball turn and run at people'.

I said: ‘Don't pass it to someone and try and play a one-two - turn and run at people'. In the second half when he did that I just said ‘wow'.

Mark Viduka is different from anyone in the Premiership and so is Martins, while Michael Owen is an outstanding player.

If you have got those three in the opposing half and trying to win you something, it doesn't half give the ones behind them some confidence, even if they have conceded a goal because they now know that there are goals in us.

It's not the end of the world if we concede the first goal like we did at Birmingham City and again against Spurs on Sunday because we now have the players and the system to put things right at the other end."

I think you've got to have so many appearances to get one.

Agree Ste. One of the only players left in the EPL with loyalty. Give him one the season he retires. Get legends like Shearer and Pedro back for a game.

the time stated at the club for harper includes the time spent as a youth/reserve etc. testimonials follow ten years service in the first team squad. anyone fancy looking up his debut? at a guess i'd go a year or two after given signed. given is in his tenth year
