Given Set For Surgery
By Tyne Talk March 18 2008
The Toon stopper has missed the Magpies' last three matches due to the injury that has been recurrent since his horror collision with Marlon Harewood back in September during which he suffered a perforated bowel. He travelled to Belgium last week to seek the views of a specialist.

"After consultation with Dr Ulrike Muschaweck, Shay Given will have surgery in Munich today to cure his recurrent groin problems" said a statement released by the offical club website

"He is expected to make a full recovery and will be absent for a six-week period"

He has only managed 19 appearances this season but could make a return before the season is out.

Luckily he has a more than capable deputy in the form of Steve Harper who is obviously relishing the chance to play regular first team football.

I didn't realize the groin injury occurred on that play. Of course we wish him well. And he's being sent to one of the world's foremost authorities on this kind of injury.

They don't need to rush him back, though. I'd prefer to see him miss the remainder of the season than have this become a recurring thing-too many of our squad have been hit with those (Emre, Owen, Viduka, Carr).
