Allardyce Verdict as Newcastle Drop 2 Points

By Tyne-Talk August 26 2007
Sam Allardyce spoke out after his team only managed to draw with fellow northern side Middlesbrough. N'Zogbia opened the scoring in the 22nd minute which was shortly dismissed by a Boro equaliser in the 28th minute thanks to former Spurs player and £6.8m signing Mido.

It wasn't until the 2nd half that Newcastle found the net again thanks to Mark Viduka in the 77th Minute when once again Boro bounced back three minutes later in the 80th minute with a goal from Julio Arca.

The Newcastle manager who is yet to see his side lose a game since the beginning of the season gave the following interview:

"We feel like we've lost. We feel that having got the lead twice that should have been enough the second time around to win the game. It would have been a very precious three points.

But unfortunately it was not to be and we switched off. Even after that I really thought we were going to win it.

In realistic terms disappointment goes on further because of the two injuries - Stephen Carr has a hamstring (injury) and Peter Ramage looks (more) serious. I'll have to be busy next week to cover that.

We are undefeated but a draw we are a little bit disappointed with but we'll look forward to Wigan next week."

In response to the lack of celebrations from Viduka after scoring against his former club whom he left on a free transfer Allardyce said:

"He knew a lot of people here and said if he scored the winner he wouldn't celebrate too much but he's done his job here today. He's as disappointed as the rest that it wasn't the winner."

With reference to calls that Mido's equalizing goal was offside Allardyce said:

"It's such a tight decision, sometimes they go for you and sometimes they don't. It's not an easy one for the assistant. I can understand why he didn't the flag up."

Elsewhere Gareth Southgate praised his Middlesbrough side:

"We played really well, we played some good football at times and looked a threat when we went forward. We have shown great character."

During the match there were several injuries with Stephen Carr and Peter Ramage both going off for Newcastle and Boro's Jeremie Aliadiere being stretched off in an unconscious state after a collision with Steven Taylor.
