Both sides made good chances in the first half with Tom Hateley's long range effort producing a fine save before Aalesunds hit the bar at the other end.
Jamie Murphy scored his sixth Euro goal, and breaking Stevie Kirk's record in the process, put the Well in the lead on 48 minutes. A great cross from Hateley was turned back into the box by Chris Humphrey who picked out Murphy to shoot home from 12 yards.
Just as it looked as though Motherwell would win Saunders fouled Phillips in the box in injury time, and Mathisen sent Randolph the wrong way to earn a draw for the hosts.
Despite the late disappointment this is still an excellent result and keeps Motherwell in the box seat ahead of the return next Thursday, which is all we could have asked for ahead of this tricky away tie.
