Celtic see off ten man Well

Celtic's opening goal
By grabar
November 9 2008
In a game marred by controversial refereeing decisions Motherwell lost to Celtic by two goals to nil. Motherwell looked to have a good goal not given in the 10th minute and then saw DAvid Clarkson shown a straight red for what looked like a yellow card challenge
Motherwell failed to capitalise on some good early pressure at Celtic Park this afternoon and were made to pay with a goal in each half, the second coming after David Clarkson had been shown a straight red card.

In 10 minutes Shaun Maloney had to clear a John Sutton header off the line, and despite the claims from the Well players that the ball was over the line nothing was given.

Well looked to heading into the break on level terms until a half cleared cross from Cillian Sheridan found Paul Hartley at the edge of the box and his well hit shot left Graeme Smith helpless.

Well created more good chances at the start of the second half with a Hughes volley flashing over and Porter bundling wide from close range. But things changed on 58 minutes when Clarkson was shown red for catching Paul Caddis with a flailing arm.

Thirteen minutes later Scott McDonald wrapped up the points with a shot from the edge of the box.

Who knows what might have happened if the game had stayed at eleven v eleven throughout the game. We played well enough for long spells and probably deserved something from the game.

Having said that Mark McGhee seemed to disagree as he said after the game, "To a degree we played well but I was very frustrated because I think we can play better.

"We've lost because we weren't good enough, nothing else.

"I'm not going to hang on to that goal that we might have had because it was in the midst of a performance that wasn't as good as I had hoped."
