Match Preview: Crewe Alexandra
By TarnTalk August 12 2008
BOTH sides suffered defeat in their first match of the season this weekend and both will be hoping to make amends in the League Cup tonight. On paper Barnsley really should be the favourites against League One side Crewe Alexandra but as we know too well, the game isn’t played on paper and Crewe will be pleased to have the home advantage.

History of Barnsley against Crewe:
Having met each other 49 times previously, Barnsley have been the more successful side winning 23 matches and losing just 11. The Alex have won the last three games between the two sides but prior to that Barnsley were the victors in 5 out of 6 meetings with the other game being a 2-2 draw.
The last time the two sides met in the League Cup was in 2000 when Barnsley won 4-0 and then 3-0 in a two legged 2nd round tie.

Last season’s cup exploits:
Crewe was knocked out of the cup in the first round last season against Championship side, and future promotion side Hull City. Let’s hope for a repeat this season.
Barnsley didn’t fair much better, only making it to the second round before being dumped out by Newcastle in a game that saw Simon Davey field a side that included Dwayne Mattes in midfield.

Tarn Talk prediction:
Barnsley should win this match but it will not be easy. If Davey refuses to change from his tried and failed formation of playing Hassell in midfield and a defensive pairing of Moore and Souza then we will really struggle. Especially as he has a history of failing to motivate his side against the less glamorous sides. Predicted score: 3-1 to Crewe.
