Nicky Bailey
Ian Harte put Carlisle ahead with a penalty follow-up after Deon Burton was judged to have held after a corner kick. The Addick's front man was himself felled just five minutes later; he claimed his six goal of the season from the spot.
Level at halftime, Parkinson would have hoped to press on for a victory but instead two long range efforts from 35 year old Graham Kavanagh on 63 and 83 minutes condemned Charlton to their second defeat of the season.
An uncharacteristic triple substitution from Parkinson on 71 minutes, bringing on Basey, Shelvey and Mooney, failed to have the desired effect. Charlton were unable to mount serious pressure on the home side's goal.
Elliot Omozusi made his debut at right back but was later replaced by Basey. Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme came in for the injured Rob Elliot in favour of Darren Randolph. He managed to save Harte's initial penalty and had little chance against Kavanagh's efforts.
The result means that Charlton have claimed just two wins in nine league games; hardly championship form. That they remain in second is fairly fortuitous, however MK Dons and Colchester are just one and two points behind respectively.
The Addicks now have two away cup games and can hopefully get back to the habit of winning games in preparation for the important game against MK Dons at the Valley on November 14th.
