Elliot Signs a New Deal: No1 For How Long?

Only 23 years old
By Nick Blackbourn
September 18 2009
Rob Elliot signed a 3-year deal today, tying himself to the Addicks until 2012. He has cemented himself as Charlton's number one since replacing Nicky Weaver last season. The 23 year old has played for the club 35 times.

Elliot is a solid goalkeeper and can only improve as he puts more games under his belt. Goalkeepers have a long shelf life (if you will) and at 23 years old, Elliot could, in theory, be goalkeeping in the first team for the next decade.

A youth team product and a Charlton fan himself, he is exactly the type of player all fans like to see play for their club. He cares. When he win he's elated and when we lose he's distraught; more so than just being a competitive professional.

This is a positive move coming after Jonjo Shelvey signed his own extension not too long ago. There were worries of an SE7 fire sale,  off-loading our saleable assets in this last transfer window, but instead we have added, kept our best players, and our young players are here to stay. (And if they don't their lengthy contracts will demand higher transfer fees!)

Though not as exciting as new additions, current players signing new deals shows us that a club insiders are happy to commit to the club. That is a positive sign. As a club Charlton really seem to be gaining positive momentum as opposed to the downward spiral of recent seasons.

At the moment we are certainly heading the right direction with one big qualification; lets hope our long term finances will be solidified soon.

23 is young for a keeper. If he gets better and stays with us, he could well be with us for years.
