Irishmen In Euro Draw
By Ade O`Connor
August 29 2003
A number of Irish players play for teams involved in the recent European Cup draw, a sign of improving times in Irish football. John O`Shea and Damien Duff will take part in the Champions League, while many more compete in the UEFA Cup.
Manchester United, John O`Shea’s club, play in a group containing Glasgow Rangers, Panathinaikos and Anderlecht. O`Shea will be expecting his team to progress after scoring his first goal for the club and the only goal against Wolves on Monday night.

Damien Duff makes his Champions League debut this season, and will play against Lazio, Sparta Prague and Besiktas. Lazio and Besiktas should prove to be two testing ties, even for the super stars assembled by Roman Abramovich.

Meanwhile, in the UEFA Cup Shay Given and Andy O`Brien of Newcastle have been paired off with NAC Breda of Holland, after crashing out of the Champions League qualifying game on penalties against Partizan Belgrade.

Steven Reid’s new club Blackburn Rovers will challenge Glenclerbirligi (Turkey); Richard Dunne’s Manchester City face Lokeran from Belgium and Rory Delap of Southampton will play Steua Bucharest in a tough draw.
