Goals from full debutants Jozy Altidore and Tom Cairney helped Hull into the third round of the Carling cup with a 3-1 win over southend. Goevanni also scored in which was a good night for the Tigers fringe players. Tony Warner, Nathan Doyle, Liam Cooper, Nicky Featherstone, Tom Cairney and Will Atkinson all enjoyed rare starts.

Hull took the lead as early as the 8th minute when youngster  Cairney curled a beautiful left-footed shot over goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall and into the top corner of the net from 20 yards for a goal on his debut , 1-0 to Hull. The 1st half wasn't full of chances but as expected The Tigers had plenty of possession.

With their second effort of the game Hull doubled their lead Altidore won a freekick in the 42nd minute and stepped up to drill a low shot past Steve Mildenhall from 25 yards for his 1st goal for the club on his full debut.

Three minutes later however with their 1st real chance of the game Southend pulled a goal back. The ball dropped for Moussa on the edge of the box and he fired home past Tony Warner who didn't move. Hull 2-1 Southend.

Into the second half and Hull were still playing some neat passing play but without really troubling Southend, however Altidore did bring a save out of Mildenhall with a low shot from distance.

Southend did have chances to equalise and Tony Warner was called into action on 64 minutes when the goalkeeper rushed off his line to block the an Alex Revell shot.Warner was called upon again moments later when he saved a shor from Lee Barnard from 25 yards.

With 15 minutes left to play substitute Geovanni volleyed home into the bottom corner from the edge of the area to make it 3-1 to Hull, Goevanni came close again 6 minutes later when his free kick dipped and swerved just over the bar  .
