Manucho Goal Not Enough
Fagan had a great chance in the 25th minute after being sent through, but two poor touches allowed Jones to get a touch on the ball before Mendy fired the loose ball across the face of goal from a tight angle.
Middlesbrough went back in front on 29 minutes when Matthew Bates was allowed to connect at the near post and fire past Duke. City struggled to get back into the game this time and it was the home side who looked more likely to score again before half time.
Half Time: Hull 1-2 Middlesbrough
Hull had the first attempt of the second half, but Manucho's weak shot was easily saved by Jones. Robert Huth had a chance for Boro but he glanced a Stewart Downing free kick wide. Manucho almost had a second goal on 71 minutes when he beat Jones to a looping cross, but his header was cleared off the line .Downing wasted a good chance for Boro when he shot straight at Duke before Marney headed just over from a Ricketts cross at the other end. Middlesbrough sealed the win with a minute to go. Boateng was dispossessed and when King was played through, he made no mistake in slotting the ball past Duke.
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate:
"I thought our work ethic was brilliant.
"We had to be men, we had to stand up and answer some questions that were being posed internally and being thrown at us externally.
"We have give ourselves hope now. We are still in there fighting and you just never know."
Hull boss Phil Brown:
"We asked for a lot but delivered little. It wasn't great play by Middlesbrough, but poor play by us.
"The pressure is being cranked up. It looked as though Middlesbrough responded to that as opposed to us.
"I'm not saying players make mistakes deliberately but the pressure got to the players collectively."
