Match Report: Hull v Tottenham

Sucker Punch!!!

By Eye of the Tiger
February 24 2009

Hull stretched their run of games without a win in the league to 9 after losing 2-1 at home to Tottenham . Hull are now without a win the league since December 6th . Their recent run of form has left them 13th in the table and only 6 points off the drop zone. The win for Spurs moves them up to 14th and only a point behind Hull. After 2 draws in the league against West Brom and Chelsea the Hull players looked to have a renewed confidence as they started the match brightly, Garcia having the 1st effort but it was deflected wide for a corner. Tottenham Struggled to get close to Hull in the opening 5 minutes of the game  as the Hull team played with confidence. Hull could’ve taken the lead on 14 minutes when a mix up in the Tottenham defence almost lead to an own goal luckily for Tottenham Cudicini was back on his line to avert any danger.

On 17 minutes Tottenham took the lead against the run of play , Modric set up Lennon on the edge of the box and the former Leeds man sent a right footed shot past an unsighted Matt Duke. 1-0 to Tottenham a lead they didn’t deserve. The game then became scrappy before Corluka gave away a needless corner . From the Corner Hull found an equaliser , the corner came in , Cudicini flapped at it and it found its way to Turner at the back post who stuck out a leg to prod the ball home to make it 1-1.

After the Goal Hull went in search for another one as Cousin fired a shot from 25 yards his shot just went wide of the post. Garcia then tried to open the Tottenham defence but his attempt to get the ball to cousin was dealt with by the Tottenham back line. Tottenham then had a chance of their own , a Modric Corner was glanced away by a Hull defender only for the ball to come to Woodgate however Woodgate didn’t react quick enough and his attempt was prodded over the bar. The rest of the half was a story of a bit more vision and craft would have seen better chances as the half fizzled out without either team having much in the way of a chance except for near the end when Turner sent a free kick high over the bar. Half time and it was 1-1.

Tottenham started the second half much more lively then they started the 1st . Tottenham began to pressure the hull defence with a string of corners and plenty of possession in the final third . Darren Bent had a volley saved by Duke on 49 minutes as Tottenham looked to take the lead . Gardner then kept Hull in the game with a great block from a powerful Palacios Volley . Robbie Keane then tried a to chip Duke fro 45 yards the keeper always had it covered though as the effort was off target. On 66 minutes Corluka had a header from 10 yards he was unmarked but he could only send onto the bar, another let off for Hull.

With 23 minutes remaining Brown brought on Mendy to replace Cousin . This move wasn’t a positive one and meant Garcia was alone man up front. This was obviously a sign that Hull just couldn’t cope with the much improved Tottenham team. The nervy defending continued from Hull as Tottenham kept the pressure on. Tottenham then made a substitution that they felt could win them the match unlike Hull , Darren Bent coming off to be replaced by pavlyuchenko.

As the 80th minute marked approached Hull seemed Happy to settle for a point and shockingly But on 77 minutes Zayatte hit the post with a header which had Cudicini beaten Hull so unlucky not to have taken the lead. The game entered the last 10 minutes and all the tempo and quality had gone from it. On 86 minutes though the sucker punch came in the form of a Woodgate header, Assou-Ekotto crossed the ball into the box and Woodgate rose highest to send the ball past Duke. 2-1 to Tottenham and only 5 minutes to play.

Hull then threw on Geovanni in search of an equaliser but it was too late . Hull had played for the Draw and got beaten. The result now has many fan asking if Phil Brown can actually keep Hull in the league. Brown still has many fans backing but a minority are starting to asking questions. Full Time Hull 1-2 Tottenham.

Manager Views

Hull manager Phil Brown:
"I'm not worried about relegation. That's the wrong word. It's always been in the back of our minds.

"We can't lose games like that. We've got to learn the little details we need to pick up on.

"But I believe we have enough ability and character in the camp to get through this poor spell."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp:
"We've got to play Monday and Thursday and we've got a cup final on Sunday. It's ludicrous.

"It showed why I rested players. People should understand that is why I do my job and that is why they do their job.

"They made it difficult in the first half, they worked their socks off and were always a big threat at set plays.

"But in the second half we created the better chances and were the better team and it's a terrific result for us."
