Youngsters lose to late Aztex goal

Weaver Stadium
By James Knowles
October 15 2009
An academy Stoke side lost to an 85th minute goal against sister club Austin Aztex last night.

A healthy crowd of 554 at Nantwich's Weaver Stadium were left somewhat let down last night as Stoke fielded a side with just an hour of first team experience amongst them.

That man was Louis Moult, who put in a good shift against Stoke's sister club, Austin Aztex.

The visiting USA side had the better of a poor first half, but seemed intent on losing balls- smashing them out of the ground from the most extreme of angles.

Ryan Connor's set piece deliveries were causing trouble for the Aztex defence, but it was a late set piece from the visitors that won the match.

Eddie Johnson kept a corner alive and his header fell to the back post, where Welshman Gareth Evans nodded home to win the match five minutes from time.

Stoke's left back Zak Foster had a golden opportunity to level matters but blazed his strike over the bar with virtually the final kick of the match.

The Aztex's next game in England is this evening against Accrington Stanley (7.00 kick off).

Stoke City: Parton, Hedley (Sinclair, 90) Cohen, McDonald, Foster, Urwin, Nicholls (Stockhall, 65), Connor, Lund, Alexander (Stockhall, 65), Moult.

Austin Aztex: Gallardo (Noble), Sakuda (Diao-Jimenez, 62) , Evans, Bernard, Rayman (Gilbert, 62), Silva (Holmes, 71), McMahen (Watson, 45), Callaghan (Patterson, 45), Siren (Stair, 62) Alexandre, Johnson.
