Robbie Fowler
With news that £3million will be added to the Blackburn Rovers transfer kitty, by the trustees of the late Jack Walker’s estate, Rovers fans might have been expecting the first signing of new boss Paul Ince’ s tenure to have been a player of relatively high profile.
However none could have predicted the shock move from Ince for his former Liverpool teammate, Robbie Fowler. The 33-year-old former England forward spent much of last season being nursed back from a hip injury by a patient Cardiff City.
Understandably the Welsh club, who had a wonderful FA Cup run last season in reaching the final, are somewhat stunned by the move. Cardiff are particularly taken aback because they were of the belief that Fowler would sign a one-year contract to remain at Ninian Park.
Fowler will join Rovers and the club’s website says that he “will be a member of the travelling party on their pre-season training camp in Germany”. Whether this results in a permanent move remains to be seen, but Fowler's agent George Scott has been explaining the surprising move:
“Robbie was all set to sign up at Cardiff but at the last minute Paul Ince came in and handed him a chance to return to the Premier League. He started in the Premier League and it seems right to finish his career in the Premier League.”
A statement on Cardiff's website confirmed the deal: “Late on Thursday Robbie informed us that he has been offered the opportunity to join Blackburn Rovers. We fully understand the lure of the Premier League was a major factor in his decision and we wish Robbie well in the future at his new club.”
So Robbie Fowler is the first player to arrive under Paul Ince, only time will tell how many players arrive at Ewood this summer, but surely none will be as outrageous as this shock transfer?!
