Makes his first signings

Blackpool sign their first two players in the transfer window, securing the services of DJ Campbell and Graeme Owens on loan. Campbell s pacy striker, and Owens a winger, they fill the gaps that were left open by other loan players as they departed and rejoined their old clubs. One loanee who left has now joined Wolves, as Alan Gow looks like he is destined for Premiership football next season.

Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston promised new players to play against Birmingham, and he has duly delivered. Two new arrivals on the same day have given Blackpool a fresh look, as they hope to bounce back from their disappointing FA Cup defeat. The first new signing was rumoured to have happened yesterday in the shape of Middlesbrough’s Graeme Owens.

Owens is a product of the Middlesbrough youth system that has produced the likes of Stewart Downing, Adam Johnstone and former Pool keeper Brad Jones. Owens signed on at the Teeside club at the tender age of 15, playing a key role in the successful Middlesbrough youth cup team, which they went on to win. This season he has made a handful of cup appearances for Gareth Southgate’s side, making his full debut against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carling Cup. He joined Chesterfield on loan at the beginning of the season, making just 4 appearances before he went back to the North East. He joins Pool on a months loan, and the loan will be extended until the end of the season should he impress.

Also signing on for the Seasiders today is DJ Campbell, a name familiar to most with FA Cup folklore. He was a trainee at Aston Villa but failed to impress enough to earn a contract, and he dropped down into non-league for Chesham United, scoring 16 goals in 29 appearances. He then spent two years at Stevenage, scoring just 3 goals, before being loaned out to Billericay. He signed for Yeading soon after, where he was his most successful, playing 89 games and scoring 63 goals, including goals in the FA Cup, a competition which he would make a bigger impact on the next season.

He signed on at Martin Allen’s Brentford for a meek £5,000, on a one year deal. He scored two goals in a major FA Cup shock against Premier League Sunderland at Griffin Park, which earned him a move to Birmingham. He couldn’t quite make the grade in the Premier League for the Blues, scoring just 9 in 43 appearances, which saw a move to the to-be relegated Leicester, where he made his debut against the Seasiders on the opening day at the Walkers Stadium, a game which Blackpool won 1-0.

Two players that are likely to calm down the D&G Brigade, and some attacking players who could really spice up the team going forward.
