Non-Leaguers dispatch Blackpool

Got it wrong?

Blackpool have been dispatched from the FA Cup for the second season in succession in the Third Round. Non-League Torquay United were rarely troubled as they sent their Championship opponents packing, with Matt Green scoring the only goal. Threadbare squads and unfir players may be to blame, but nothing changes that Pool will have to wait another season for another cup run.

Pool made 5 changes from the side that played Wolves on Sky on Monday night, with Danny Coid, David Vaughan, Stuart Green, Ben Burgess and Dan Nardiello all came in, replacing Rob Edwards who dropped to the bench, while Gary Taylor-Fletcher was suspended, and Liam Dickinson, Alan Gow and Kyel Reid's loans all expired.

Torquay made the brighter start, starting as they meant to continue. The strike partnership of Lee Sills and Matty Green causing Barker and Evatt problems, and Roscoe D'Sane making Ian Harte work hard down the wing.

Going forward, Blackpool were poor. Fox was struggling to get his passes right, and Southern couldn't get a grip on the game. Supply from the wings was in short supply, with the clear lack of fitness from both David Vaughan, returning from injury, and Stuart Green, called in after his loan spell at Crewe.

Nardiello had an early opportunity but poked wide when put through, and then was denied by a good save by Scott Bevan. The lack of urgency going forward by Pool was sensed by the home faithful, who roared on their team to good effect, as Matty Green shot wide, and Roscoe D'Sane fired over.

Pool's resbite didn't last long, when a long ball from the full back Nicholson picked out Green in behind the Seasiders' defence, and Green fired a low left foot shot which arrowed into the bottom corner, giving Rachubka no chance.

There were no real scares on the Torquay goal, and it was a miracle it was only 1 when the half time whistle went, as the Blue Square Premier side pushed to move out of sight.

Half Time: Torquay 1-0 Blackpool

Whether or not the required rollocking came from Tony Parkes is unknown, but if it did, it certainly didn't change anything, as Torquay continued to dominate the game.

Pool couldn't string two passes together. David Vaughan couldn't get into the game, Green, despite his efforts, was struggling with his clear lack of fitness. Whether Green did enough to remain in first team plans remains to be seen, but his lack of first team opportunities to prove himself may mean that he is given another chance.

As the minutes ticked away, Green was replaced by Jorgensen, Nardiello was replaced by Merella for the youngster's debut, and Blackpool suddenly had a bit of spark, with the youth team graduate showing, on debut, that he can beat a man, run with the ball, but his youth and inexperience was the vital factor in his inability to turn the game around.

In the end, if there was to be another goal, there was only going to be one team who were going to get it. The home side were dominating, and when Ian Harte was lucky not to be sent off after a foul on Green on the edge of the box, the following free kick was driven against the post by Nicholson, and Rachubka managed to palm away the rebound.

Pool just couldn't turn it round, and a poor performance got what it deserved, and that was a beating by the non-leaguers.

Final Score: Torquay United 1-0 Blackpool

My Man of the Match: Dominic Merella
