Blackpool edged through to the 3rd round last season after a penalty shootout against then Premiership side Derby County, But this season Blackpool and a host of other clubs were not present in the 3rd round and there were more shock exits to come.

Arsenal 6-0 Sheffield Utd

Even with the added fortune of £30 million in their back pocket Sheffield Utd were unable to defeat an Arsenal side that had an average age of just 18 years old. Niklas Bendtner, one of the more senior players on the pitch, got the goals going scoring 2 great goals set up by the young Aaron Ramsey. Then the young Carlos Vela bagged a sensational hat trick with which included a great curling shot round the Sheffield keeper from a tight angle. It was the young prodigy of Jack Wilshere who netted Arsenal 6th and rounded of an impressive display.

Burnley 1-0 Fulham

Fulham became the latest Premiership side knocked out of the Carling cup as they were undone by a late Burnley goal by Jay Rodriguez in the 88th minute at Turf Moor. It was a poor performance by Fulham who let Rodriguez through on goal after a defensive mix up which led to Jay rounding the keeper and scoring.

Leeds 3-2 Hartlepool

Leeds struggled to a win Last night after they left it late on in added time to net the winner. Andy Monkhouse scored early on in the 2nd minute but let in Robert Snodgrass 12 minutes later to equalize. Porter did net won back for Hartlepool to put then in front at half time. But it was Gary McAllister men who came out fighting in the second half with a goal 15 minutes into the second half from Showunmi. With extra time pending it took a miracle shot to end the game and that is what happened. An expert past by Howson found Robinson who struck the ball superbly to net the winner in the 90+1 minute.

Liverpool 2-1 Crewe

This wasn’t such a walk in the park for Liverpool as by half time they were level at 1-1, not something Rafa would of wanted. The game started with a Daniel Agger goal, which signaled his return from injury in the 15 minute. But it was O’Conner who netted on back 10 minutes later. The second half was wrapped up in the first 15 minutes and Lucas signaled his first team ambition with a superb goal.

Man Utd 3-1 Middlesbourgh

Man Utd took a leaf out of Arsenal’s books last night and start a young side with Amos in net and the likes of De Silva, Possebon and Walbeck all starting. However with the likes of Vidic, Brown, O’Shea, Anderson, Giggs and Ronaldo on the field it showed Man Utd intent to win. Ronaldo kicked things of in the 25th minute with a superb header from a Giggs corner, which sent the ball in the back of the net. The second half got going with an equalizer in the 56th minute by Adam Johnson, but the 22 men who started the game soon became 21 as Pogatez was sent off for a tackle on young Possebon, a tackle that could of ended his career. It was from there that Gigs got his goal with a Nani goal late on in the 90th minute.

Rotherham 3-1 Southampton

It was the shock of the round this game as League 2 side Rotherham, 20th in the league, came out to win Southampton at Sixfields. It took 20 minutes for the first goal coming from Nick Fenton and that was it for the first half. Goals then came from Danny Harrison in the 56-minute before Stern John bagged a goal back. But it was Drewe Broughton, who was out of club at the beginning of the campaign, who netted the 3rd in the 69th minute.

Stoke 2-2 Reading (Stoke win 4-3 on Penalties)

The first of two penalty shootouts happened last night as Stoke managed to beat Championship side Reading 4-3. It was an early start for Stoke when Vincent Pericard netted on the 9th minute. However it was all level going into half time when James Henry netted in the 45+1 minute from the penalty spot. The second half saw Sidibe score in the 50 minute until, with 15 minutes to go, Henry scored again and took it to extra time. With no action in extra time it was the shootout, which Stoke won.

Sunderland 2-2 Northampton (Sunderland won 4-3 on penalties)

Properly one of the most gripping ties as Northampton Town nearly wiped Roy Keane’s Sunderland from the competition. It was Colin Larkin’s 20-minute goal that sent the Sunderland fans into boo-ing their team at half time. This however didn’t help matter as Luke Guttridge scored in the 81st minute with what seemed to have sealed the match. However all was not well as Anthony Stokes scored in quick succession in the 86th and 90+1 minute to force extra time and penalties, which Sunderland won 4-3.

Swansea 1-0 Cardiff

The battle commenced early as the two Championship teams faced each other for the first time since 1999. The outcome was decided by one goal by Gomez in the 57th minute. However it was the cleanest match 6 players were booked (5 from Cardiff) with Mcphail seeing red. The scenes after the match we shocking as police had to resort to batons to break up any trouble in the all Wales Match.

Watford 1-0 West Ham

The other Premier League side to drop out was West Ham after a late own goal from Mullins ended their cup run.
