As the football returns this Saturday Tangerine-planet.co.uk welcomes back one of its regular features They Played for Both. Although some section s of our support hate him with a passion, this player is considered one of the best midfielders to play for us of the 90s. Ladies and Gentleman Mickey Mellon played for both.....


Mickey started his career at Bristol City, the Scottish Born midfielder never played in his native land, but did turn professional at 17. He spent time on loan to Cork City playing eight times and scoring once. However when it came to transfer talks, Cork couldn't meet the asking price so Mickey returned to Ashton Gate.

He spent four years there before moving on to West Brom. In just over a year he played 38 games and scored six goals. Attracting the attention of then Blackpool Manager Sam Allardyce. At Blackpool he was notorious for been a tough tackling, goal creating, midfield man.

Add to this he was always good for a goal, scoring 14 in 124 games and most were crackers. Including a goal when Blackpool travelled to Gillingham 96/97. The game ended 3-2 to the Seasiders but without Mellon's 65th minute equaliser then the scoreline could of been very different.

His ability to change games impressed all the members of the tangerine army who saw him play. Tangerine-Planet reader Joe Atherton told us " Micky Mellon was by far one of the best midfielders to pull on a pool shirt in the 90s".

After Sam Allardyce was sacked Mellon moved to Tranmere and would later go on to play for rivals Burnley before rejoining Tranmere before retiring from professional game with Kidderminister. In all he played in over 450 games. Cost a combined total of £775,000 and scored 40 goals. Even though he was jeered at Bloomfield Road as he wore the war colours of the opposition. Mellon will always be considered by some as a Seasiders legend.
