Reedo's Review: Seasiders vs Sheffield Wednesday

Goal for Dickie!
By Danny Reedo April 20 2008
Blackpool’s win on Saturday was their first in eight and has also pushed us into retaining our Championship Status next season with a 2-1 win over struggling Sheffield Wednesday. With the skies set to overcast, the atmosphere turned up to boiling point and the resident fat man taking his place both teams were greeted by a sea of chants as both teams were ready to do the business.

The game started lively but it was Blackpool who got the party started with a superbly struck goal by Claus Jorgensen in the 6th minute which Keeper Lee Grant couldn’t keep out. Cue the whirlwind as Jorgie entered into tornado mode with his spinning celebration.

With the Blackpool fans starting to party Wednesday were capitalising with Deon Burton coming close but wide. Talking about coming close, the referee never came close to a correct decision and Sheff Wednesday goal cam from a wrong decision by the ref who awarded a free kick from an alleged dive by Hoolahan. Songo’o whipped it in and was met by a fine save by Chubs but Woods was there to header it home in the 12th minute and give the away fans something to shout about. Wednesday came close again to a lead but a expert clearance was needed by Jorgie.

Then just before half time disaster struck……….for Wednesday as the most sweetly struck goal scored at Bloomers as Mr Paul Dickov did what he does best a sweet left foot volley into the top left corner to make it half time 2-1 to Pool

Half Time – Blackpool 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday

The second half brought more controversy for the ref that is who surely learnt from his mistakes in the first but the kept on coming. But then the ref made a hat-trick of correct results in the 51st minute as a bust up broke out between Gilbert and Dickov. Gilbert was sent from play after an elbow to Dickov’s face, Dickov got a yellow for his push on Gilbert and the refs penalty shout was overruled by the Linemen’s as Dickov fouled first which was all correct.

Efforts came thick and fast with Dickov nearly adding to the tally with Keith lobbing perfect balls up the field. Andy Morrell saw his classical goal overruled for offside but everyone thought he was on.

The game ended with a massive lift and a emotional tribute to the players who gave it their all in a must win game with both Crainey and Jorgie letting out all their thanks to the fans. With a tough end to the season to come with Plymouth away the Watford on the last day all Blackpool need is one more point and Sheffield Wednesday to lose to guarantee Championship Football next season.

Ref was awful. Cant believe he gave a goal kick when the sheff wed player headed it behind his own line.

We've certainly had some tosspots of referees & assistants this season, but this clown on Saturday must rank as one of the worst. They're not only bad but more worryingly bloody dangerous. (Sm123)
