Grant Holt
Q: Grant Holt Signed for us yesterday on loan, what have Forest fans made of his move?
A: Generally speaking, people are not too upset to see the back of Grant Holt.
He was a popular figure last season and he endeared himself to the crowd with plenty of goals and a lot of hard work. This season he hasn’t really been the same player, although that’s not entirely his fault.
I think we’ll be more annoyed if we don’t replace him. A couple of injuries and we’re in trouble.
Q: We've heard of how he is out favour at Forest but is there a reason for that?
A: First and foremost, he’s out of favour because he hasn’t been good enough.
There are a lot of Forest supporters who will tell you, with good reason, that Colin Calderwood is to blame for his lack of form. For long periods this season we have played a 4-5-1 system with Holt over on one of the wings.
It doesn’t suit him at all and most people are as annoyed with the manager for picking him there as they are with Holt for under-performing!
Q: Overall how would you describe his time at Forest? And how do your rate him as a player?
A: Well, he certainly hasn’t had a quiet time here. Last season he was finding the net regularly and playing at the top of his game, but he was mysteriously dropped from the starting line-up and almost offloaded to rivals Bristol City. Inevitably this was blamed on a spat with the manager.
During the summer he fell out with boss Calderwood again, this time over the terms of his contract. And he burned bridges with a few supporters in January after saying that playing Liverpool in the FA Cup would be a chance to put himself in the “shop window” for a “bigger club”.
In form, Holt is a top League One striker. His finishing and movement are excellent, and he is a strong physical presence as well. When he’s settled he’s also a hard worker and could well be popular.
Q: Do you think he can make the step up to Championship Football?
A: It’s a maybe. When Holt is in form he is very difficult for any defence to deal with because he knows where to put himself, and how to use his strength. Out of form and unsettled he is a completely different player and everything from his first touch to his ability to win a header suffers hugely.
If he plays as a centre forward and has the backing of the crowd then I wouldn’t be too surprised if he does the job. He’ll never be a world-beater, so to speak, but he could be useful.
Q: And say he impresses what are the chances of us signing him on full time basis?
A: He and Colin Calderwood clearly have their differences so if he is in charge over the summer then I can see the door being open for Holt to leave. That said, at the moment there is next to no chance that Calderwood will still be here.
Clearly Holt is a man who gets what he wants in any case, and if he wants the move I am sure he will get it.
