"The week or so after the Tottenham game was horrible, and although the performance against Liverpool in our last game was actually good, if we had shown that during the rest of the season we would not have been where we were.

"It was a sad occasion because we thought we had let ourselves down. We had some good players but we just didn't perform.

"But we know what we have to do now to get out of the division. It's a hard division, but we can do it.”

Alan Pardew started to prepare for the imminent departure of his star man, by snapping up Crewe forward Luke Varney for a fee of £2 million and Colchester forward Chris Iwelumo on a free transfer.

Various newspapers have been linking the former England Under-21 International man with large money moves away from The Valley, and it was only this morning that SkySports News linked him with a £12 million move back in to the Premiership. Despite the speculation, Bent still thinks tgar his team can bounce straight back up to the Premiership.

"We've got some fantastic players. Charlton have definitely got the players to get out of it and I'm sure we will do so."

"In terms of my situation I've not heard anything and I haven't spoken to the manager or the chairman. Obviously the club feels two more strikers are needed and it gives the manager food for thought.

"I don't think it's all about me. Charlton have done a lot for me; I love the club and I love the fans, who have been brilliant with me.

"Of course when you are young you want to play in the best league in the country and that's the Premiership, so I'm disappointed we went down this season. But I've got no doubt whatsoever that we can return straight away next year.”
