Varney began his career as a with non-league outfit Quorn, before being spotted by the then Championship side, Crewe. The dangerman signed for the Railwaymen in 2003 and after four very successful years at the club, which saw him score 35 goals in 95 league games, he joined the Addicks for a fee of £2million.

His signing along with the capture of Colchester United's Chris Iwelumo has left the door wide open for the immenant departure of Darren Bent, who is set to return to the Premiership. Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are said to be interested.

"Charlton boss Alan Pardew rang me out of the blue and asked me about Luke." Said Dario Gradi speaking to Crewe's official website.

"We discussed his strengths and his weaknesses - my reputation is on the line and I would not have made things up to get a sale.

"I'm sure he'll improve there, playing with and against better players, and there is room for improvement in him."
