CHARLTON Athletic have today signed Colchester United's Chris Iwelumo on a free transfer and Crewe's Luke Varney in a deal which is to be around £2Million. Iwelumo was out of contract at Colchester in the summer, hence the free deal and Varney joins after a successful season in League One.

League One hitman Varney who is 24 years-old, will join the Addicks for a reported fee of £2m from Crewe.

Iwelumo, 28, was out of contract with the U's in the summer, and after turning down Colchester's initial offer of a new contract, he joined Alan Pardew's men on a free bosman like deal.

"Luke is an exciting young player and perfectly fits the mould of a Charlton player," said gaffer Alan Pardew speaking to BBC Sport.

"Chris has a great goalscoring record and the fact he's free represents a fantastic bit of business."

The duo have almost certainly brought the front men in to pave the way for the imminent departure of Darren Bent, who is rumoured to be joining a Premiership outfit, with Liverpool one of the teams being mentioned.

Pardew expects to add further new faces to the Charlton Athletic squad, as he aims to bounce the Addicks straight back up to the Premiership.
