England's U20's 1-1

England missed out on a place in the second stage of the FIFA U20 World Cup last night, but they were able to celebrate their first goal in the competition for 12 years. Brian Eastick's side were in need of a victory to progress any further in the competition, but when Uzbekistan took the lead with just 13 minutes left,it was obvious their chances were over.

The opening ten minutes of the game was fairly even, with England just in front in terms of possession and territory. It was also the Young Lions who came closest to scoring the opening goal when Nimely picked up a loose ball following a scramble in the area, but his low shot flew just wide of the post in the 12th minute.  Paul Marshall then had an attempt at goal with a free kick in the 15th minute but was narrowly off target.

Uzbekistan's Murod Khalmukhamedov looked dangerous with the long throws he was giving, and one of them almost led to a strike on goal in the 27th minute when the ball was found by Davron Mirzaev in the area, but his shot was blocked and England managed to clear the ball away.

England almost had the breakthrough on the thirty minute mark, when Kieran Trippier’s ball into the box was too high for Martin Kelly and Uzbekistan then managed to clear it away from Marshall, who was next in line to get on the end of it. Nimely then latched onto a pass from Manchester City colleague Adam Clayton to break clear down the right, but his shot was cut out by goalkeeper Sanjar Kuvvatov just before Febian Brandy got there.

At the other end, a nice move through midfield from Uzbekistan came to nothing as the half time mark approached, with captain Sunnatilla Mamadaliyev shooting from 30 yards which went well over the bar.

England made one change at the break, with Matthew Briggs coming off to be replaced by Jordan Parkes at left-back and the game continued in a similar fashion to the first half with the Young Lions straight on the attack. Brandy tried his luck in the 48th minute, but his low shot from the edge of the area went wide of the post.  Matthew James then picked out Trippier in an forward position on the right and his first time cross looked dangerous only for defender Islom Tuhtahujaev to get a foot in first and keep England at bay.

Just after the sixty minute, Kelly overlapped well on the right and delivered a good cross for Nimely, but his looping header was brilliantly saved by Kuvvatov.

With just over ten minutes left of the game left, Ben Mee, was dispossessed on the half way line and when substitute Kenja Turaev took the ball, he passed it nicely to Ivan Nagaev, who made no mistake when he sent a low shot straight past Parish to open the scoring and give them the lead. It almost went to 2-0 in the 81st minute when Nagaev curled in a shot from the egde of the area which looked like it was heading for the top corner but Parish managed a lovely save and sent it over the bar.

Just moments before the final whistle, Nimely got onto Parkes' throughball and sent it inside the post with his left foot levelling the score for England and breaking the 12 year record for the Young Lions in this competition. England nearly snatched the lead in the closing seconds of the game with the resulting corner as Parish sent the ball goalwards but it was deflected off target.

The 1-1 draw was not enough for either team as they both saw their World Cup hopes dissapear as Ghana and Uruguay go through to the next round.

Not seen the squad for the U20s but i would be interested to see how many were pulled out due to the bigger teams not releasing players?
