Today Walsall defender Anthony Gerrard has told Ian Roper that he has a battle on his hands to partner young defender Scott Dann in the heart of The Saddlers defence but the 20 year-old insisted it’s nothing personal towards Roper.
The long serving defender Roper limped off with a ankle injury early on in last weeks clash with Boston United and missed the Macclesfield Town game and Gerrard was the ideal replacement for Roper at the back for Walsall.

Gerrard who joined from Everton at the start of last season after impressing during a loan spell at the club has found it hard to break into the squad with Roper and Dann putting in top quality performances at the back, but the defender believes Ropers injury will give him the chance to prove himself and establish himself along side Scott Dann and become Richard Money’s 1st choice of partnership in defence.

The Saddlers are not short on competition in the defence area, adding to Ian Roper, Anthony Gerrard and Scott Dann is Allan Picken who the Walsall faithful haven’t seen much of because he has been out injured for most of the season, in the only game he has started for The Saddlers, which was the 1-0 victory over Rochdale, he looked to be a good player, who has amazing potential, but we have seen this from players making their debut before.
