Sunderland have smashed their club transfer record fee to land Rennes striker Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan, 24, arrives on Wearside for a fee in excess of £13million and has signed a four-year contract.

The striker was one of Ghana's stars during the World Cup, scoring three goals as the Black Stars came within a penalty shoot-out of reaching the semi-finals.

Gyan averages a goal every other game for Ghana, having netted 22 times in 44 international appearances.

Gyan, born in Accra, is an international team-mate of Sunderland defender John Mensah, who is loan from French club Lyon.

Having begun his career with Liberty Professionals in Ghana, Gyan joined Udinese in 2003, scoring 11 goals in 39 appearances as well as netting on a further 15 occasions during a loan spell at Modena.

He also played and scored in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, bagging the fastest goal of the tournament when he scored after 68 seconds against the Czech Republic - Ghana's first ever goal at a World Cup Finals.

Gyan was on the move again in July 2008 as Rennes paid Udinese 8m euros to take the player to France. He went on to make 47 appearances, scoring 14 times.

And he impressed during Ghana's run in South Africa, scoring three of his team's four goals.

Gyan could be in line to make his Sunderland debut in the Barclays Premier League at Wigan on September 11 - the Black Cats' next game after the international break.

Gyan said: "It's been a long day, but finally I'm happy to be here and my family and friends are also happy for me."

My family is in England already and I am happy this is the right place for me."The Sunderland coach has faith in me because he has been following me for two years now."

I am pleased I have the opportunity to come to England."Gyan added that he will embrace the supporters' "never say die" attitude and is convinced he can be a success on Wearside.

He said: "I follow English football and I know Sunderland have incredible fans."

I especially know about the derby when they play against Newcastle. That is something incredible. I have witnessed that myself."

The Sunderland fans never say die. They keep cheering their team on for 90 minutes. That gives me confidence to play maximum football.

I am here to do my best and show what I can do. I have watched Sunderland play before - I think it will be good."

A good goal from a very good pass' makes him a decent player, if he shines with D.Bent he could be worth his weight in Gold, if not he will be on his bike like Jonesy, saying that Jones in my opinion was getting far too lazy and wouldn't perform second to Bent....Here's hoping all will be well and up the ladder we will go.>
