After the game Sunderland Boss Ricky Sbragia resigned form the managers position and was told he'd have a job for life at SAFC.
"I've decided to stand down as manager because I was thinking about Sunderland Football Club and they need to take the next step and get a bigger name, it's as simple as that.
"My brief was to keep the club in the Barclays Premier League, we've achieved that and I'm delighted. It's about Sunderland, not me.
"I spoke to Niall about the situation on Saturday and what I was thinking about doing and I felt this was the best idea. I felt it was right to go, so we've put some things together and I hope to stay involved at the club in some capacity. I felt this was the right thing to do.
"My biggest concern has always been staying in the Premier League and we've done that. It's time to hand the job on to someone else who can take this club further on.

"The supporters have been absolutely brilliant all season but today they've been out of this world. We have to give them more on the pitch. "I've enjoyed it when we've won. If it had been somebody else apart from Niall, I probably wouldn't have taken the job, but I always thought we were good enough to stay up. All my decisions have been for Sunderland. I've been here as a coach for many years. I just think we've got to kick on, make another appointment and look forward to next year."
