In what is more definitely the worst performance of the season so far Sunderland deserved the result. The goals they conceded were soft - and the front two could have played til midnight and not scored.
After an average opening 40 minutes, in which neither side threatened, the Baggies broke the deadlock when, from a corner, Jonas Olsson lost his marker to fire a shot past Marton Fulop.
The Wearsiders were even worse in the second 45 minutes, and the noisy 3,000-strong away following could hardly believe it, having gone into the game with such high hopes.
The Baggies doubled their lead in the 59th minute. Marc-Antoine Fortune sprinted into the box and squared it for Chris Brunt to steer the ball in from eight yards. It was too easy for the home side.
It was game over as far as Sunderland were concerned, as they appeared to lack the fight to get back in it. They have now gone five games without a goal away from the Stadium of Light.
However, Djibril Cisse, who was a passenger for most of it, should have handed his side a lifeline in the 65th minute but he steered Teemu Tainio's shot over the top from close range.
Albion were in the cruise control for the rest of the game and they sealed it in the 88th minute.
Brunt cut inside and found Juan Carlos Menseguez who turned Anton Ferdinand and hit a shot past Fulop, into the bottom corner.
It left Sunderland's fans shell-shocked. They went into the game hoping to see their team get a win that would have all but secured survival. They certainly did not expect this.
When the players were asked to forecast the results they expected to get from the last six games, you can be certain this was not on the list pinned to the wall.
Everton, the FA Cup finalists, are next up for Sunderland and again it will be a pressure situation at the Stadium of Light.
