McCartney undergoes foot operation

McCartney Sidelined
By The Black Cats
December 17 2008
Sunderlands Northern Ireland International Defender George McCartney, 28, has undergone minor foot surgery on both feet after complaining of foot pain during Sunderlands 5-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge at the hands of Luiz Felipe Scolari's Chelsea. McCartney who has already been out of action for the last six weeks will be out for at least another month keeping him sidelined into the new year.

McCartney, who moved to Sunderland from West Ham in August for a second spell at the Stadium of Light, has played eight games this season.

Sunderland will also be missing £9 million goalkeeper Craig Gordon (ankle) when they visit the KC Stadium to face Hull City on Saturday.

Club Captain Dean Whitehead has a leg injury and he faces a battle to be fit for the game at the KC Stadium.

The injury (dead leg) forced Bananaman (Whitehead)  to miss Sunderland's 4-0 thrashing of West Brom last weekend.

Whitehead was replaced by Teemu Tainio in the West Brom game and will be lucky to regain his place after The Black Cats Man of the Match performance he put in, Tainio's workrate, tackling and distribution of the ball was awesome.

Do you think Whitehead should get his place back? Personally I believe Tainio may be the better option as he breaks up the opponents attacks before they get to our defence.

Tainio also plays a more defensive game, he sits back, freeing up our other midfielders; Richardson, Malbranque, Reid; to go forward and attack.

Don't think he should be too much of a miss.

I'd pick Danny Collins at left back over McCartney, he wins everything in the air.

Could play him at centre back with Anton Ferdinand, I've never been a big fan of Nosworthy.

Or alternatively, stick Collins in the middle and put McCartney at left back.
