The Stadium of Light was opened in 1997 with the first game against Ajax. Since being opened the stadium is known to be one of the best modern stadia in Europe. Opened with a capacity of 42,000 but after the north stand extention the stadium can hold 49,000 fans.

The Stadium has hosted 2 England international games; England v Belgium(friendly) in 1999 and England v Turkey(Euro 2004 Qualifier) in 2003.
