Chopra To Sign £5m Deal
By Black Cats July 13 2007
Cardiff City agreed transfer fee with Sunderland for star striker

Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra is about to compleat a move to Roy Keane's Sunderland in the next few days.

The 23 year old is a former Newcastle player and scored 22 goals in the Championship last season. It is said he is keen on a move back to the north-east after spell in south Wales.

Last night Sunderland & Cardiff City agreed a fee for Michael at around £5m. Cardiff City boss Dave Jones said he is sad to see such a talent leave but he knows the money can move the club forward.

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale said that Cardiff had been aproched by another unnamed club for a unnamed price for Chopra. This offer has been turned away.

Sunderland pulled out from a £6m move for Preston striker Dave Nugent but Chopra's goal record from last season is much better.

Michael is on his way to the north-east for a medical before signing, he left the Cardiff training camp in Portugal on Thursday.

What a bargin and what a hero he will be!! I've always hated roy keane, hes nothing but an aggressive bully but i hate him even more now, in the past i always had respect for sunderland fans coz they stuck by their team through thin and thinner, that was untill recent seasons when you seem to have deserted your team when the going got tough!! I want to be grown up and wish chops all the luck but i can't, i want him to fail against prem defences and yous lot to get on the geordies back, then i want him to regret leaving us!!

Re: Chopra To Sign £5m Deal
I must admit, i never liked Keane much before, mainly because of his aggressive nature, but when we needed a new manager a year ago i cant think of a more movivated man who could have turned us around.

Alot of fans did desert us in our darkest hour, and its the same fans who came back at the end of the season. Myself, i dont see the point of being a part time support, no logic in it.

I think its too early to judge Keane on his signings, yes on the surface they dont seem the best players in the world but you can only realy judge them about at the half way point in the season.

Lets face it, the lad we have signed so far are a @#$%& load better than the some of the guys Mick M signed last time we were promoted.

Re: Chopra To Sign £5m Deal
We dropped down to below 30,000 which was awful, but it left us with the hardcore mackems and i loved that, because we didnt boo, we got behind no matter what happened.

Stan, arent you a wolf? I remember wolves used to get 30,000 near enough, with temporary stands, the start of this season you were getting 17,000. It happens to all fans.

As for chops, im sooo happy with this season, he will get goals and he is defo better than what we have got.

Re: Chopra To Sign £5m Deal
Why would i be interested in chops if i was a wolf?? i'm a cardiff fan, i have been for 35 years, i mentioned the sunderland fans not because we are any better than you but because to me you and plymouth were teams i envied coz their support was so loyal come what may, but over the last couple of seasons you were no better than leeds fans!!lol

I suppose keane will take you places you haven't been before and just when you think hes god he'll bog off to man utd, it would be great for football if FIFA rules that you had to be born within 10 miles of a stadium to play for the club and had to stay their till you were 30, plus a wages cap of no more than 5 grand a week!! football in general has lost the loyalty of the players and fans, we need to get that back, did you know that when celtic won the eurpeon cup in 1967 10 of the players on the pitch were born within a mile of celtic park and the other one was born just outside, that will never happen again, a very sad fact if you ask me.

Re: Chopra To Sign £5m Deal
I saw you chatting to daz, i just assumed. Our support has been great if you think about what we have been through. Worst premiership team ever, twice! I bet most other clubs would just tumble even further than . We havent gone below 24,000 in SoL and away support has always sold out, eg... bottom of the championship, taking 5000 to derby and 6000 to preston. What other away fans can do that? 10000 to barnsley, its just unheard of.

Our support has dropped yeah, but i would prefer 30000 great mackems than 30000 great mackems and 18000 boo boys.

Re: Chopra To Sign £5m Deal
Very true, on a smaller scale i'd rather 13,000 true bluebirds than 20,000 glory hunters, we had 43,000 out of 74,000 fans at the millenium for the playoff final, where the feck did those 30,000 fans disappear to?? i wish i knew! we've got loyal support as well, 1500 to sunderland on a tuesday night a few seasons back, then when we played on a saturday we had 700 there, go figure!!

Can't wait for the season to start, 30 days and counting!! Have you met Daz?? hes as mad as a hatter, he looked after us like a goodun when we went to wolves a couple of seasons ago, he'd be spot on if he didn't support the dingles lol

Thanx rodders :-D

Stan no i havent, was going to meet him at safc vs wolves but he had something on and couldnt come up.

I remember that game on a tuesday night, you say 1500 but half of them spent the night in jail lol (exagerated). I was in the pub when the brawl happened, it took 2 years to refurbish after that brawl (the wheatsheaf), was just stood there with glass bottles flying over my head.

Warning....the new True Faith cover is doing the rounds.

Google it if you want as i feel it would not be seen as a "friendly gesture" if i posted it here.

Chopra is going to have to back pedal a bit i think.

If you mean the quote on the front page:

Anyone would be happy with a goal in such a game. Nothing massivly wrong with what he said. If he said "my best moment was seeing the faces on thoes sad @#$%& after my goal helped us win 1-4"

then might have a problem, but what he said was true.

If i scored against the mags but ass would be out mooning in there faces, (joey barton style), so i think what chops said was something to forgive.

Personally i think chopra chose sunderland because the fans will be on his back, which will give him more motivation to succeed, makes sense to me. Hes at the stage in his career where he will be make or break, i think he knows sunderland can make him a hero!

There have been many before him who have proven undoubtedly that you can represent both clubs admirably.

Re: Chopra To Sign £5m Deal
Venison, who played for England at youth and under-21 level in his early days, started his career in his native North East with Sunderland and set a record when he became the youngest captain at a Wembley cup final when, aged 20 years and 220 days, he skippered Sunderland against Norwich City in the 1985 League Cup final. Unfortunately for both Barry and Sunderland they lost narrowly 1-0.

Venison had originally made his debut for the Black Cats, aged just 17, on 10 October 1981 in the 2-0 league defeat to Notts County at Meadow Lane. He went on to play in 20 league games that season scoring 1 goal in the process. The steady and reliable right full-back settled into first team football well at Roker Park and became a firm favourite.
