Arnold 0v0 Notts C HT0-0
Pre-season Friendly

Notts County’s youngsters played out a goalless draw at Arnold Wednesday evening on what was a very difficult surface to play on.

There was only six Notts professionals that played and all are below the age of 24, Deeney, Needham, Wilson, Martin, Frost and Gleeson, and three of the six were replaced at half-time with Whitlow making a second have appearance in midfield.

It was a difficult and rock hard surface to play on, and was a wise move not to take a full strength squad to King George V Stadium.

Deeney was called into action on a few occasions by Arnold but managed to keep them at bay, while from set pieces in the first half Martin tested former Notts Centre of Excellence goalie Carl Nijuk with some long-range efforts.

The second half saw Needham, Martin and Gleeson replaced by Whitlow and Trialists Samo and Bradley. And with the pitch being hard to play on and the ball bobbling all over the place, it was difficult to get a pattern of play going, but the young Scholars deserve plenty of credit for their performances.

Akers, Hewitt and Wilson all had chances but failed to get the ball into the net, leaving the game to end goalless.

Hewitt and an Arnold player ended the game with a clash of heads, with Hewitt being carried of on a stretcher as the Referee blew the final whistle.

Speaking after the game, 38-year-old Player-Coach Mike Whitlow told Magpie World: “The young boys did well on a difficult night on what was a bone-hard pitch.”

“We looked at the pitch before and we decided instead of 70 minutes for the likes of Martin it would only be a half, so the old man had to go on.”

“It was good fun. Football is fun whatever level you play at.”

I tried my best to help the lads out there, and having coached them for the last few weeks if I didn’t try to help them something would be wrong.”

“There were a lot of plusses to come out of the game looking at the kids. It was a hard game, but the stuck at it and deserve credit.”

Notts Team: Deeney, Rob Austin, Needham (Bradley HT), Wilson, Craven, Gleeson (Samo HT), Frost, Martin (Whitlow HT), Akers, Hewitt, Molloy.

Next Match: Sun 23rd Jul (H) Coventry 3pm
