Goalkeeper Saul Deeney returns to Meadow Lane, the club announced on Magpie World. The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 International signed for us late last night.

He will now, no doubt, be a rival for the number one spot with Kevin Pilkington this coming season.

Saul previously signed for us back in 1999 as a scholar and then professional terms in 2000. While with us he made 48 appearances and establishing himself as the first choice goalkeeper during the 2004/05 season.

Saul was released in October 2005, after becoming out of contract, a long contract wrangle then followed, and Gudjon Thordarson brought in Kevin Pilkington and Shaun Marshall during the uncertainty of Deeney’s future on a week-to-week contract with the club entitled to compensation should another club sign him. After being release Saul went and joined Burton Albion for the remaining season.

He also went on to perform heroics against Manchester United in their FA Cup run which earned them a money-spinning replay at Old Trafford and a large amount of press coverage.

Saul had been training with Walsall and also played in a pre-season friendly earlier this week, but last night he put pen-to-paper at Meadow Lane.
