Key players or not part 3

By Sam
July 12 2006

In part 3 we look at our remaining Defenders and see a few of our new players, we focus on Gary Silk, Tommy Hannigan, Stephen Hunt Bobby Wilson and Mike Whitlow.

Part 3 of our squad will now see us focus on the remaining 5 defenders, starting with our number 12 Gary Silk.

Gary started as a trainee for Portsmouth and was there from 2003 to 2006 and in that time, he went on loan to Barnet, Wycombe and more recently Boston making a total of 31 appearances while on loan.

Gary is another one of the players brought in by Steve Thompson during the summer and with only a total of 31 League starts. And with him turning 21 tomorrow and not getting too much experience at previous clubs, will be looking to get more first team action.

Number 17, Tommy Hannigan is a player that started has a trainee with us but hasn’t made any appearances, so will be wanting to show the Magpies fans what he can do.

Stephen Hunt, our number 17, played with Colchester for the last 2 seasons, started in 16 league games in his first season their, but last season only made 2 appearances coming off the bench in both them games. Signed for us during this summer and another player that will be looking to get more games.

Bobby Wilson, number 19, Another one of our trainee’s and looking to make his first team debut for us will no doubt be a back-up for our defence, but will have to see how he plays and if he makes any starting appearances.

Mike Whitlow, Number 29, at 38 has plenty of experience. Started with witton in 1987, got his first action when joined Leeds in 1998 for £10,000, made 62 league appearances and 15 as a sub and was there for about 3 ½ years before he moved to Leicester in 1992 for £250,000.

While at Leicester he appeared in 141 league starts, scoring 8 times, then moved in 1997 to Bolton for £500,000 then joined Sheff Utd in the summer of 2003 and only spent a year there, before coming to Meadow Lane in the summer of 2004. Made 22 league starts for us last season.

Has a few honours to his name including Division One Winner 1992, Division One Play-off Final Winner 1994 and League Cup Winner 1997.
