Everton have had several goalkeeping problems this season and have used 5 different goalkeepers in the Premiership this season. With worries about Nigel Martyn's future due to injury and Richard Wright seemingly being out of favour, David Moyes feels signing a goalkeeper is a priority. Howard lost his place in United's team this season due to the arrival and impressive form of Edwin van der Sar and it looks unlikely that Howard will displace the Dutch International any time soon.

With Howard off to the World Cup with the United States of America, David Moyes will be hoping the deal is tied up before then, which is why Howard will seemingly be signing as soon as the transfer window opens.
