Yobo arrived at Goodison Park on loan from Marseille in 2002 and after a hugely impressive season David Moyes spent 5m to make the deal for the defender permanent. Since then Yobo has become a key memeber of the Everton squad and a favourite of the fans. There had been some transfer speculation as to whether Yobo would be at Everton in the coming season with reports suggesting Arsenal were considering a move for the Nigerian International. But the 25 year old centre back has ended all of these rumours by committing his future to Everton.
Yobo said, "I have waited a long time for this to be sorted out. There was no doubt of me being happy, I wanted to stay."
"But I wanted a commitment from the club. At the end of the season I spoke with the manager and he told me the ambitions of the club and that was the first step. Then I accepted that I wanted to stay."
The signing of first Andrew Johnson for 8.6million and then Joleon Lescott for a potential 5.5million seems to have been a major factor in Yobo's decision to stay in Merseyside. And David Moyes has expressed his delight at Yobo's decision to stay.
Moyes said, "We are really pleased Joseph Yobo has finally signed. He is a good player and we know he is someone that will get better. He has great pace and athleticism and he had an outstanding season last season."
Now that Yobo has signed a new contract, Everton have healthy competition for the 2 centre half places. David Weir and Alan Stubbs have both recently signed new deals and provide huge experience, while Joleon Lescott has joined and could provide a long term partner for Joseph Yobo, leaving the future bright in that position for Everton.
