Jared Borgetti and Johann Smith put the Wanderers two goals to the good in the early stages only for Neil Kilkenny and Oliver Allen to bring the Midlands side back on level terms with just under half an hour played on the clock.
Borgetti opened the scoring for the evening on eleven minutes when smashing home a corner from Danny Stott past the Blues goalkeeper Adam Legzdins and this was quickly followed by a second Bolton goal from American speedster Smith who used his pace and flair to fire in an excellent shot from the edge of the box.
Irish midfielder Neil Kilkenny pulled Birmingham back into the game when converting a Mathew Sadler centre and this was to later prove costly for the Wanderers as young forward Allen equalised on 26 minutes when firing a shot on the turn past Bolton's Ali Al-Habsi.
Borgetti missed out on a chance to net his second goal and a possible matchwinner whilst defender Jarostaw Fojut fired in a free kick which was saved with considerable ease by Legzdins.
