Portsmouth 1. Bolton Wanderers 1.

Khalilou Fadiga scored his first goal in Bolton colours as he turned from villan to hero in a useful 1-1 draw against struggling Portsmouth at Fratton Park earlier this evening.

The Senegal international, who was overlooked for this months African Nations Cup, had earlier blazed a first half penalty over the crossbar but made amends midway through the second half by scoring direct from a free kick.

Wanderers lead lasted only a quarter of an hour as substitute Pompey substitute Azar Karadas volleyed home past Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen with four minutes remaining as the clock ticked down for full time.

Bolton made changes to the side which defeated Arsenal in the FA Cup as England U21 full back Nicky Hunt returned to the starting eleven. There was also a first full start for the Trotters recent signing Matt Jansen who played in a three man attack at the expense of Jared Borgetti who was amongst the substitutes.

A poor first half saw very little clear cut chances but Portsmouth's Argentinian new boy Andres D'Alessandro was giving a good account of himself following his recent transfer deadline move from German club Wolfsburg.

Fellow new boys Dean Kiely, Wayne Routledge and Benji Mwaruwari also played for the South Coast club in a much changed line up to that which faced the Wanderers in the reverse fixture at the Reebok Stadium back in September.

The hosts where forced into an early defensive change as their influential captain Dejan Stefanovic was required to leave the play on the quarter hour mark after falling awkwardly so ex-Newcastle full back Andy Griffin entered the fray earlier than expected.

Wigan-born Griffin slotted into his more natural full back role as the experienced Linvoy Primus made the move into the centre to partner Republic of Ireland international Andy O'Brien at the heart of the Pompey defence.

Stelios Giannakopoulos had Bolton's first clear cut chance of the half on 19 minutes but he could not add to his matchwinning goal against Arsenal in the last game as he fired wide following a mistake by substitute Griffin.

Portuguese midfielder Pedro Mendes had the best chance of the opening half for the home side but the former Spurs player saw his shot eventually gathered by the Wanderers veteran goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The major first half talking point came in injury time in the first half as Pompey's recently signed keeper Kiely had brought down Giannakopoulos in the area following good work by Bolton striker Matt Jansen.

Khalilou Fadiga stepped up to take the resulting penalty but the Bolton man let nerves get the better of him to fire well over the crossbar in what was perhaps the most clear cut chance of the opening period.

The second half of the game saw Portsmouth play with much more renewed optimism as they introduced a more attacking line up as injury stricken forward Svetoslav Todorov replaced England U21 international captain Gary O'Neil.

Joey O'Brien was back in his natural midfield position for Bolton due to numerous injury problems and the young Irishman nearly netted his first goal for the club albeit due to some last minute intervention by the Portsmouth defenders who where working hard to keep the scoreline level.

On 64 minutes Wanderers new boy Jansen spurned an effort to open his account for his new club as he failed to get the correct first touch when on a one on one situation with home goalkeeper Dean Kiely.

A few minutes later that chance mattered little as Fadiga atoned for his earlier miss by curling home a deceptive free kick which left ex-Bury and Charlton Athletic man Kiely at sixes and sevens in the Portsmouth goal.

The ball into the area was awkward to defend against and the Hampshire club paid the ultimate price as Fadiga scored his first goal in any level of domestic football since starring for French club Auxerre in 2003.

Versatile Matthew Taylor nearly brought Portsmouth back into it with a shot from distance on 76 minutes but Jaaskelainen got down well with a fine save which helped to  preserve the Wanderers second half lead.

Bolton youngster O'Brien expertly cleared off his own line to deny substitute Todorov in the final minutes of the match but there was more drama to come as far as the Lancashire side where concerned.

On 85 minutes Pompey grabbed a share of the spoils with an equaliser as fellow sub Azar Karades converts a cross by the on-loan Wayne Routledge to continue the Wanderers dismal record down at Fratton Park in recent years.

The Danish star volleys past Jussi Jaaskelainen to deny the Trotters a third straight win in all competititions as Polish youngster Jarek Fojut makes his Premiership debut as a late Bolton substitute for goalscorer Fadiga.
