Bolton Wanderers 1 West Ham United 0.

A Jared Borgetti header midway through the second half sent Bolton Wanderers through to the next phase of the Carling Cup in a very tight encounter at home to West Ham United this evening.

The veteran Mexican international struck just after the hour mark when heading home a deep left wing cross from Senegal flier Khalilou Fadiga at the far right hand post.

A relatively low turnout graced the Reebok Stadium for this game between two good Premiership sides with just over 10,000 present at a the stadium on a damp autumnal evening.

West Ham had the better chances in the first half but the Bolton defence stood strong to deny the London side from taking a first half lead as David Bellion, Tomasz Repka, Teddy Sheringham and Marlon Harewood all went close in the opening period of the game..

Bellion fired over the crossbar of Bolton goalkeeper Ian Walker whilst Hammers strike duo Sheringham and Harewood both saw their shots on target blocked by the Wanderers defence.

Czech Republic hardman Repka was the only player to force any of the goalkeepers into a save in the opening half when his effort on 22 minutes was gathered at the second time of asking by the Trotters former England keeper Walker.

The second half saw a number of changes made as both managers looked to get their sides in front. Former Fulham utility player Martin Djetou came off the bench for his Bolton debut in place of Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye as the Wanderers also saw Henrik Pedersen come on for Stelios Giannakopoulos.

Khalilou Fadiga is clearly in a mood to get back into the Trotters fold as was demonstrated during last week's UEFA Cup game against Besiktas. Tonight the Senegal star was as equally impressive as he forced the veteran West Ham keeper Shaka Hislop into a low save following a shot from the edge of the box.

Just a minute later the opening goal came as Borgetti scored his second goal in a week. Fadiga was the architect with a fine left wing cross and the Mexican bundled in his 65th minute header at the far post.

Walker then had to be alert for the Wanderers at the other end as he was to save a dangerous free kick by former international team mate Paul Konchesky who joined the Hammers in the summer from London rivals Charlton Athletic.

Konchesky was to fire in the first of two set pieces for the evening but found that Bolton's veteran custodian was equal to the attempt on goal to keep the Trotters lead in tact.

Wanderers midfielder Kevin Nolan nearly got onto the scoresheet for the second time in a week but his header with twenty minutes remaining was to go over the crossbar of Hislop.

Hammers boss Alan Pardew then tried to pep up his side with a double change as Shaun Newton and Jeremie Aliadiere came on for Irish midfielder Clive Clarke and the tiring Teddy Sheringham.

This was to make little difference as Bolton pushed for a second goal with Ricardo Gardner going close after being put in a good position thanks to the improving Fadiga .

At the other end another Konchesky free kick flew over the bar of Walker late on as substitute Aliadiere also went close when earlier forcing the Bolton keeper to parry the ball after an incisive breakaway.

Borgetti nearly added a second goal in the final minute of the game in an attempt which would have seen him become Bolton's joint top goalscorer for the season but Trinidadian Hislop tipped away the attempt from the onrushing South American forward.

Bolton await to see who they face in the next round at the weekend as local rivals Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United both went through following wins over Leeds United and Barnet respectively.
