Backroom Staff 2007-2008
By Mark Heys May 3 2007
Things need to be perfected on the pitch at Premier League level and the only way for the likes of Bolton Wanderers to achieve this is if they have the right kind of people on their backroom staff.

PRESIDENT: Nat Lofthouse OBE

Nat's association with Bolton Wanderers dates right back to 1939 when he joined the club as a teenager prior to the outbreak of the second World War. In his heydey he was one of England's finest ever centre forwards and served Bolton with distinction right up until 1961 when a knee injury brought a premature end to his career with the Wanderers, his hometown club and only employer. Won 33 caps for England scoring 30 goals and won the FA Cup with Bolton in 1958. In 1994 he was honoured with the OBE by H.M Queen Elizabeth II

CHAIRMAN: Phil Gartside

Local businessman who was appointed onto the Wanderers board of directors in 1988. Eleven years later he succeeded Gordon Hargreaves as the Bolton chairman and has since helped to fund moves for the likes of Youri Djorkaeff, Jay-Jay Okocha, Fernando Hierro, Ivan Campo and Hidetoshi Nakata.

VICE CHAIRMAN: Brett Warburton

Part of the Bolton based Warburtons family who manufactor bread and distribute it nationwide. Appointed onto the Trotters board of directors in 1990.

DIRECTORS: Eddie Davies OBE, Gordon Seymour, George Warburton, Des McBain

Davies: Isle of Man businessman who sold his company Strix for £100 million in 2005. Born locally he bought a majority 95% share in the Wanderers for a fee estimated to be £2.2 million in the 2003-2004 season.

Seymour: The longest serving member of the boardroom having been involved at the club since the early 1980's. Seymour owns the Gordon's car group which is based locally.

Warburton: Like Brett Warburton he is part of the Warburtons family and has also been around at the club for a number of years.

McBain: Former cheif executive and secretary who was appointed as a club director in 2003. McBain has previous knowledge of a football club environment having been at Blackpool in the late 1970's.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE: Allan Duckworth

CLUB SECRETARY: Simon Marland

Former club accountant who succeeded Des McBain as club secretary. Simon deals with a number of tasks behind the scenes at the Reebok Stadium and has also wrote a number of books on the club over the past 15 years.

TEAM MANAGER: Gary Megson

The much travelled Gary was appointed to the role of manager in October 2007 just a week after predaccesor Sammy Lee had departed the club. The flame haired Mancunian cut short a six-week spell in charge of Leicester City to return to Premier League management with the Wanderers

During his playing days he was a combative midfielder with Plymouth Argyle, Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Norwich City, Lincoln City and Shrewsbury Town but it is perhaps his two spells with Wednesday where he gained most acclaim.

Starting management in 1994, he had a spell as caretaker manager at Norwich City prior to taking the reigns at Carrow Road permanently a year later. In 1996 he moved to Blackpool and stayed there for a year and then moved on to Stockport County.

After three years at Edgeley Park he took over at Stoke City but his tenure at the Potteries club ended early when Stoke came under the management of Icelandic owners.

In 2000 he moved to West Bromwich Albion and this is where he has had most success when twice leading the Albion to the Premiership in 2002 and 2004 but on unfortunately on each occasion the club was relegated.

He was appointed Nottingham Forest manager three months after leaving West Brom but his time at the City Ground was brief and he lasted just over a year in charge.

After unsuccessfully applying for a number of managerial positions Leicester chairman Milan Mandaric appointed him as Leicester boss in September 2007 but he left the Walkers Stadium after just six weeks to take charge at Bolton

COACHING CO-ORDINATOR: Archie Knox

Vastly experienced coach who joined Bolton in August 2007 in the role of coaching co-ordinator. Knox had a lengthy playing career in the Scottish lower leagues with the likes of Forfar Athletic, St Mirren, Dundee United and Montrose but it is his CV as a member of the backroom which makes the most impressive reading.

He managed his first club Forfar for four years prior to becoming assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen when the Dons where winning honours on both the domestic and European fronts.

Managing Dundee between 1983 and 1986, he became Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United but left the Old Trafford outfit in 1991 to link up with Walter Smith at Glasgow Rangers.

When Smith was appointed as manager of Everton he took Knox with him and the veteran has since been assistant coach to the Scotland National Team, Millwall, Coventry City and Livingston. His latest role prior to moving to the Reebok was Scotland U21 coach.

RESERVE TEAM COACH: Jimmy Phillips

Took over the responsibility of managing the Bolton reserve team following Neil McDonald's departure to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2005. Jimmy initially worked as a coach with the club's youth academy after hanging up his boots as a player and still continues to combine that role with his management of the reserves. A former Bolton player over two seperate spells, he also played for Oxford United, Middlesbrough and Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers.

PERFORMANCE DIRECTOR: Chris Evans

Welsh-born Chris joined the Bolton coaching staff in November 2007 after a highly successful spell in charge of the Wolverhampton Wanderers youth academy.

During his seventeen years at Molineux he helped to launch the careers of the likes of Robbie Keane, Joleon Lescott, Lee Naylor, Matt Murray and Mark Clyde but the chance of a more senior role with Bolton was too good to turn down.

His playing career took in spells with Arsenal, Stoke City, York City and Darlington. He currently holds a UEFA Pro-licence having took the course alongside Wanderers boss Gary Megson in 2005.

FIRST TEAM PHYSIOTHERAPIST: Andy Barr

Andy returned to the Reebok Stadium in late 2007 after two years away with Championship side Southampton. A former Luton Town trainee he was previously a tried and trusted member of Sam Allardyce's backroom staff prior to seeking pastures new with the Saints. He replaces Steve Foster who was standing in as first team physio whilst the club searched for a replacement for Dave Galley, now of Wigan Athletic.

PHYSIOTHERAPIST: Paul Lake

Gary Megson added his former Manchester City team mate to the Bolton backroom in November 2007. Paul will work as junior physiotherapist whilst also supporting Steve Foster in first team duties.

A qualified physio since 2002, the one time England U21 star has been working at Macclesfield Town and running his own injury clinic in Northenden prior to moving to Bolton.

ACADEMY DIRECTOR: TBC

ACADEMY WELFARE & PROTECTION OFFICER: Dr Fran Walsh

GOALKEEPING COACH: Fred Barber

Fred has served Bolton Wanderers for over a decade following his retirement from the professional game in 1996. Rated as one of the best coaches in his chosen field, players such as Jussi Jaaskelainen and Keith Branagan have benefited from his expertise over the years. As a player Fred served Walsall, Peterborough United and Darlington amongst others and once offered to register as a non-contract player at Bolton due to an injury crisis.

GOALKEEPING COACH: Neil Edwards

Another new recruit to the Bolton Wanderers backroom staff after holding a similar role with Carlisle United. Neil played in over 200 games for Rochdale and has also served the likes of Stockport County and Bury during his playing days.

CHIEF SCOUT: Colin Harvey

Colin became Gary Megson's first new addition since taking over at Bolton when accepting the role of chief scout in November 2007. He had played over 300 games for Everton during his playing career and had coached them at every level including manager. In 1989 he lead them to the FA Cup Final where they narrowly lost out to Liverpool at Wembley.
