Everton Reserves 2, Bolton Wanderers Reserves 3.

Braaten - Bolton Scorer
By Mark Heys March 25 2008
A brace from Kevin Wolze and a further goal from Daniel Braaten gave Bolton Wanderers reserves a rare victory when they defeated Everton in a five goal thriller at the Halton Stadium in Widnes on Tuesday night.

Norwegian international Braaten was one of two experienced faces on show for Bolton with Spanish midfielder Mikel Alonso being the other senior in what was an otherwise young squad.

The hosts included some experienced names in their side too, with Portuguese full back Nuno Valente and on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender Anthony Gardner taking their places in the Everton starting eleven.

Wanderers forced themselves into the lead on twelve minutes through the forementioned Braaten. The Scandinavian dispossessed defender John Irving before firing home a shot from within the area past goalkeeper Jamie Jones.

Everton nearly forced an instant reply with two chances in quick succession but Ryan Harpur's drive from distance went wide and Valente's cross was gathered by Bolton keeper Robert Lainton despite striker Kieran Agard being in close proximity.

Bolton increased their lead in the 17th minute with their second goal of the game and first for the night for German youth international Wolze who curled home a delightful free kick which gave Jones no chance.

Wolze could have added his second and Bolton's third soonafter but Jones did well at full stretch to deny the youngster from adding to his tally.

The Toffees pulled a goal back twelve minutes before the break when Stephen Morrison followed up at the second attempt after his initial shot from a Lewis Codling cross had been blocked.

Stephen Connor nearly brought Everton level with a header that just looped over the crossbar, whilst at the other end Jones was the hero of the hour for keeping out a Robert Sissons penalty after Valente had chopped down Braaten in the box.

Everton themselves where awarded a penalty kick early into the second half when Codling was brought down and Morrison made no mistake from the spot.

It looked as if Everton would get a third goal but Codling's low shot was saved by Lainton and Lee Molyneux fired the ball harmlessly over the bar from distance.

Bolton winger Leslie Thompson brought another good save out of Jones as the half moved on and the midfielder went close again with an effort which came back off the woodwork.

Wolze made the game safe for Bolton when finally netting his second of the night with a deflected shot which beat Jones with only two minutes left to play.
