Supporters visiting from Bolton had been the victims of some heavy handed and unnecessary brutality from the Spanish police but the club has still been punished by Europe's governing body nonetheless.
Madrid have also been hit with a fine of more than £15,000 and both clubs have a three day period in which to issue an appeal against the decision.
Bolton issued an official statement after the game which stated that their supporters had been unfairly singled out by the police force and this is a claim also backed up by Scottish club Aberdeen who themselves saw a similar incident occur against their travelling supporters late last year.
A statement by an official of UEFA reads:
"Atlético were punished for the throwing of missiles and fireworks by spectators, crowd disturbances and insufficient organisation, while Bolton were fined for crowd disturbances. Both clubs may lodge appeals within three days of receipt of the grounds for the decision"
