Matthew is a Republic of Ireland youth international who first joined Bolton Wanderers in the 2004-2005 season after spending time with the Liverpool Academy set up.

He can play at Right Back or as a central midfielder and helped Bolton to their first Reserve League title in twelve years at the end of the 2006-2007 campaign.
