Questionnaire: Shrewsbury Town

1) Have you been impressed with the start to your season so far? Or do you wish you could turn back the clock? Or hide away in embarrassment?!

Quite pleased. Totally new team, so many unknowns - with so many youngsters, the aim is to simply do better than last season's 21st place. However, can't help thinking that we'd be in the play-offs for sure if we'd been a bit more ambitious away from home, and if we didn't have this odd statistic of being able to beat teams near the top, but annoyingly struggle against teams near the bottom.

2) Who should I keep an eye open for on the pitch?

1) Name: MCMENAMIN
a) Scores goals - what other reason could you possibly need for a striker?

2) Name: HART
a) Best goalkeeper in this league
b) Man Cty were sniffing around him
b) Kept us in many games this season

2) Name: TOLLEY
a) Box to Box player - full of running
b) Chipping in with a few goals this season
b) Has improved significantly under Gary Peters

3)Has your manager bought well enough to see you through until January?

Absolutely - the signings he made were very young players, but he brought in some real quality in the likes of Neil Sorvel, Colin McMenamin, and Richard Hope has been outstanding.

4) …And has your manager proved his credentials enough to keep his job until January?!

Of course - he celebrates one year in charge this week, we've seen so many improvements in that time and with such a young team under such good guidance, we can only be heading upwards.

5) What would you change about the style of your team’s play?

Change: Away tactics - I still can't work out if it is forced upon us, or if we set out that way (which seems odd since GP often plays 3 strikers away from home). But we play so deep when we are away. We are so defensive that away matches can be boring for Shrews fans. Still, we won 1-0 at Orient and 2-0 at Posh, despite being pinned back so far that the entire team were virtually all sitting in the goal. Still showed we can defend, if all that defending was a little unnecessary.

Keep: Home tactics - we're excellent at home, totally different. Only one bad performance at home and that was against Stockport but we still drew 2-2. At home we could beat anyone in this league. We play open, flowing football and rarely get breached defensively. Oh, and I'd also include the workrate Gary Peters has instilled in the players.

6) Name the one player who you question why he turns up on the team sheet every week.

Name: Unsure.
Because: Very difficult question. To be honest, no one. We have a lot of youngsters who will improve under GP and Mick Wadsworth's guidance. He got rid of the bad influences in the team, not mentioning any names (Ryan Lowe!).

7) What does your club need to do in order to improve?

Being a little more ambitious away from home. Having a Plan B when we concede (e.g. concede early against Mansfield - lose 4-0 and concede against Rushden - lose 3-0 - notice they are both lowly teams. This trend of playing poorly against lower teams is frustrating. Like I say, we scored early away at Orient, but hung on to win 1-0, even though we were under a lot of pressure (brought on by our own defensive tactics).

8) Are you satisfied that your position in the league reflects your performances?

We are 13th because we are an odd team. Our performances at home have usually been very good - we've beaten some good sides at home. Our away form is better in phases. Like I say, we play so negatively away from home, if we win games, it is because we had one chance, took it and defended for the rest of the time. We have lost heavily at teams near the bottom (Bury, Torquay, Mansfield and Rushden), simply because they scored first and we have no Plan B other than defend, which of course then fails and we lose heavily.

9) Who are the best side you’ve seen play this season?

Rochdale looked decent, Orient had us under so much pressure, but it has to be Wycombe. How we drew with them, I'll never know.

10) Is your stadium worth a trip to on a cold Tuesday evening?

No, not really for a few reasons:
1. If you like standing in the rain you should come along,
2. If you are a Chester fan, you should avoid Gay Meadow,
3. The terracing will be frozen over,
4. But who likes these modern grounds with no character or atmosphere, eh?
