About every country has their own traditional food, or diet, of some sort. Find yourself in Italy, and you'll be eating pasta. Go to France, and chances are that you'll try some snails. The Scottish 'traditional food' isn't something to really be proud of. The Scots often find themselves munching on...Deep Fried Mars Bars. No, you haven't misread this, I have indeed wrote Deep Fried Mars Bars. The Scots happen to think it attracts tourists too. Well, Scotland must have nothing much to be proud of then, I imagine. Although, it is Scotland's best known dish...
The whole Deep Fried Mars Bars are nothing new...they've been around since the mid 1990's and have since then been enjoyed by many Scots. They are basically normal (or even king-size) Mars Bars coated in batter, and then deep fried. They usually cost around 70p from your average Scottish chippie. Although the Scots too are paying for the price with their increasing cholesterol, and fat levels. Each Deep Fried Mars bar is around 700 calories, and enough saturated fat for the entire week. And that's without the fries or ice-cream! No wonder in Scotland, obesity levels are rising more than any other country in the world. And interesting to note that Scotland is one of the unhealthiest nations in Europe. I wonder why, eh!
It is indeed very popular with school kids. Which explains why their child obesity is rapidly increasing there too. You can just image it can't you: "C'mon, lets go tae chippie an' gie some Fried Mars Bars!" Well, either that or school dinners. Which would you prefer: Fried Mars Bars, or school dinners? Bloody tough 'un! They would usually eat their Deep Fried Mars bars with either fries, and ice-cream, and some Irn-Bru to wash it all down. Errr, lovely.
Mars Bars are the most favourite of foods to deep fry. Although they also fry stuff like Snicker bars, bananas, pizzas, and even pinapple chunks! Talk about deep frying obsession!
The average Scottish diet:
Breakfast- Deep fried bread, with loads of cheese and butter.
Lunch-Deep fried mars bar with fries.
Dinner-Deep fried pizza, chips.
Snack-Deep fried banana. Deep fried pineapple chunks.
Drinks-Irn-Bru. Council pop. Oil.
Talk about asking for a heart-attack, eh!
So, remember, if you're ever in Aberdeen, or anywhere in Scotland which sells 'em, do go and try Scotland's best dish!
