Levein announces latest Scotland squad

Craig Levein has announced his latest squad for the friendly with Slovenia next Wednesday.

As usual with Levein’s squads there are players in there that give you a bit of a shock and on the other hand players missing who should be in.

You can start with the goalkeepers where he has recalled Matt Gilks of Blackpool and Craig Gordon ofSunderland, both of whom have been missing for a while. This means Craig Samson and Cammy Bell have been dumped after turning up at the last moment for previous squads.

Gordon is a classic example of Levein’s double standards, having claimed he would pick players on form he has now picked Gordon who is third choice for his club at the moment.

The defence is full of the usual suspects, with Berra and Hanley included after being dropped by their club sides in recent weeks. We still have Gary Caldwell in there despite years of knowing what he can bring to the party!

Midfield sees a call up of Matt Phillips of Blackpool (who??) who has still to get clearance from FIFA on his eligibility forScotland.

Up front the most regular scoring Scot in the country, Jordan Rhodes, is dropped to the Under 21s after featuring for a few minutes in the game withCyprusthe last time the squad met up.

I know he is trying to get continuity in the squad but some of these call ups form Levein leave me baffled, as do some of the omissions. Where is Ross McCormack, why is Danny Wilson in the Under 21s?
