The Saddlers will no longer play in a formal Reserve League. A series of factors have contributed to the decision.
The Story has been broken by today's Express and Star. A lengthily interview with Merson can be found on their site. http://www.expressandstar.com/articles/sport/walsall/article_74801.php

The Pontins Reserve League is a national competition that has the Saddlers trekking all over the Country to play at poor venues.

Reserve team results have also been poor, thanks mainly to the weakened teams we've been forced to field. The article also bemoans the quality of the opposition.

Instead of playing in a regimented Reserve League, We will now be playing friendly games against local clubs. Merse also added that some of these games will be open to the public.

Merse didn't mention that this will save money, but it must have played a part in the clubs decision.

Maybe the future of Reserve Team Football will become regional league? Maybe the likes Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Wolves will carry on as they are, but maybe playing in a League with the likes of Kidderminster, Port Vale, Stoke City, Northampton, Rushden, Crewe, Chester and Peterbro' is the way forwrd

Could this also mean a smaller squad for the new season? The manager has already told us that he'd like 2 or 3 big name players rather than 4 or 5 average Joe's....

Do you think not having a normal reserve team is a good idea? Let us know by filling in the form below.
