Chester take on Boston United tomorrow, missing one key figure, which is likely to cause a few disagreements amongst the Chester support.
Technical Co-ordinator David Bell will deputise in the home dug-out tomorrow along side his assistant, club physiotherapist, Clive Goodyear.
The pair will have 4 players missing from the squad which was available to Ian Rush last week, as City went down to a single penalty 15 minutes from time at Darlington’s 27, 500 Williamson Motor’s Stadium.
Central defender Richard Hope is suffering from a cold which may rule him out of tomorrow’s clash. Former Kilmarnock and Blackool defender Shaun Hessey is likely to take his place, looking to add to the 28+3 league matches he has appeared in this season.
Michael Branch is also at risk of missing out…again. The striker has a groin niggle to add to the growing book of small injuries which have hampered his rise to playing peak football since he arrived from Bradford City in the summer. In his absence, Chester have very little resources to find a replacement. Cortez Belle, shipped away on loan to Newport County, scored 2 for his temporary club against 12th place Bishop’s Stortford in a 6-3 victory, as he helped them move away from the foot of the Conference South. Fellow forward Kevin Rapley is too away on loan, in the Conference North with second placed Droylsden. He’ll be along side former City players Steve Brodie, Peter Dogun (ex-reserves player), David Cameron, and fellow loanee, Danny Ventre (reserves player) as they search for promotion just two points behind leaders Southport.
Now back to Chester City…Chester will probably have to call on youth player-recently signed professional-Michael Walsh, or another youth player in Shaun Whalley to partner Robbie Foy up front, who has mad just one senior appearance for the blues under Ian Rush, appearing as a lively subsitute at home to Cambridge United in September. The only other option available to Bell, is to move Ryan Lowe forward to play a more attacking role after a series of appearances on the wing since signing from Shrewsbury.
Chester will probably be without Ashley Sestanovich, who is suffering from a back problem, and definitely absent is Phil Bolland in the centre of defence, who starts and finishes a 1 match ban after seeing the red card at Darlington. It means that City may give a debut to young Matty Cook, who recently signed professional terms during the summer, as City are left with no other centre-backs, unless Edmondson, Regan or Vaughan are moved into the centre from their usual full-back positions.
Wayne Brown should be back after a shoulder injury which ruled him out of the ties against Darlington and Bury. David Bell must decided between Chester’s long-serving ‘keeper, or Chris McKenzie to place in between the posts.
It is unlikely that David Bell will alter the formation of 4-4-2 which was employed by Ian Rush, having been in charge of the team for such a short time.
