Hull City 0 – 0 Swindon Town
The match was played infront of an expectant 23,125 crowd, and the first 45 minutes should have seen City take the lead. Swindon came to spoil the party and even requested that the ball boys not use multiple balls in a ploy to slow the play, but the Tigers created good chances - Junior Lewis and Ian Ashbee wasted shooting opportunites, Andy Dawson hit the side netting, Craig Fagan turned well but his shot was welll saved, also Nick Barmby saw his placed free-kick kept out by the busy Rhys Evans in the visitor's goal.
The second half, however, was a tense affair which saw Swindon come back strongly as it looked more and more likely one goal would decide the game. Then late in the game as news was coming through from Tranmere of their failure to beat Blackpool, Leon Cort was bundled over in the box by Evans and the referee awarded the penalty. With the home fans already celebrating their impending promotion, Craig Fagan had his weak spot kick saved.
So no fairtayle ending to the game, and the title now looks out of reach, but celebrations ensued nonetheless. It has been only 4 years since the club were locked out of their ground and in financial dire-straits, the rise to the second-tier of English football after 15 years away is a major achievement and a success story to give heart to other fans alike.
Nick Barmby: "It is fantastic because the lads have worked so hard. It means everything to us and it means more because we have done it at home. It is right up there when you see your own people from the same city. They deserve it for their support through thick and thin"
Peter Taylor: "It feels brilliant....I'm absolutely thrilled about what's happened today. I can't really believe how quickly the season has gone....Its fantastic and full credit to everybody.....we brought in decent players that can handle the next two Divisions. I think that's how we've got success. I think the way that we've done it is the thing that's pleased me"
Adam Pearson: "We're delighted.....What a fantastic job the manager has done. I can't speak highly enough of him. I'm proud of him and the players. We've got a young hungry team that's going to go a long way.....I'm a very happy man"
